[Japanese Movie] Tomorrow I Will Date With Yesterday’s You (BLURAY)

i know it’s a bit of a cliché to wax sentimental about a movie or director, but i can’t help myself. i love the wizard of oz so much that i believe i’ve seen it more than 1,000 times. my family has always made the annual trek to kansas to see it with me, and there were times when i couldn’t watch it without tearing up.

the first half of the movie is a love story that happens to be set in the 1990s. as a result, the movie explores many simple, but sweet moments of growing up. the second half of the movie has to do with sakutaros (sota fukushi) cancer diagnosis and his eventual death. although the movie is a mixture of comedy and tragedy, the scenes involving sakutaro are what will make it memorable.

director takahiro miki takes a much more dramatic approach in his 1997 film tomorrow i will date with yesterday you, resulting in a more emotionally charged, even melodramatic depiction of the gap between two lovers. the story follows a high schooler named sakutaro (sota fukushi) who returns to his hometown after his fiancee has left him. he begins to reminisce about the first time he met his college girlfriend (emi fukuju), and the many times they spend together. he becomes increasingly obsessed with emi, and she with him. it turns out he was not the first person in her life. as she shows him old love letters, he learns about the past love of his high school sweetheart (nana komatsu) and is left in a state of shock.

whether you rere in the mood for a tearjerker or a comedy, you can find both in the toho co. limited release of tomorrow i will date with yesterday you (sota fukushi). this 1997 romantic comedy is a tearjerker at times but it also has a few laughs. the two lead characters, sota fukushi and nana komatsu, meet on the train and become high school sweethearts. she leaves home to college, and he is left wondering what he will do. sota falls in love with his classmate emi fukuju who is also in college. he asks her to write him letters. he is heartbroken to find out that she was in love with the man he was. this is the story of their love.
