Navigating Fireworks

To make it easy to get around in Fireworks, the interface includes toolbars at the top of the workspace and panels at the bottom of the workspace. Here’s a peek at the main features:

* **Tools:** On the left side of the workspace, the tools panel has a library of basic design, graphics, and editing tools that can be used to perform basic design tasks or to create images from scratch. The tools in this library include a text tool, a shapes tool, and a selection tool, as shown in the following figure. At the bottom of the workspace is an Artistic panel, which includes a special group of tools that are used mainly for advanced graphic design tasks.

Fireworks has a toolbar with a button that enables you to switch between the tools in the workspace and the Artistic panel.

You can also use the Artistic panel to customize various button options, such as moving, sizing, and making tooltips (see Chapter 10 for more on tooltips).

You’ll see that the tools don’t show here because they are hidden until you click the space between the left and right panels. You can show and hide the panels and toolbars by clicking the corresponding buttons on the workspace.

The two panels are aligned along the top of the workspace. Unlike Photoshop, which has a special panel that enables you to see multiple images open at once, Fireworks only shows one image at a time. You can load another image if you want, though. (Figure 10-5 shows the first image; the second image doesn’t appear in this figure because I’m just showing the workspace.)

A Beginner’s Guide to Photoshopping

Nowadays Photoshop is the most popular application for image editing, and it is an important part of almost anyone’s creative workflow. If you are thinking about starting Photoshop, or if you are just curious to learn a bit more about the software, this is for you. In this guide, I am going to introduce you to Photoshop, some of the basic features, and how to get started in Photoshop.

The Photoshop interface is made up of a bunch of panels. Every panel has different features, like a timeline, perspective transform, or curves panel. For now, let’s just walk through the panels we are going to use while learning how to edit images in Photoshop.

Using the panels, you can edit an image. You can also add photos or video clips, create a new layer, or draw a selection.

1. The Tools Panel

The tools panel contains the same basic tools that you have always used with Photoshop—layers, channels, objects, and text.

Let’s start with the layers. Layers are a Photoshop feature that allows you to insert image layers into other layers to create a multi-layered composition. The most common way to add layers is to click on an empty layer and drag your image into the layer. Let’s make a new layer using an image.

You can create a new layer by selecting Layer > New > Layer (L). You can use any type of file for this layer, just make sure the file is a bitmap or RGB (8 bit or 24 bit). The file format is important because each image format has different features. As an example, Photoshop Elements does not support the GIF format and it also has fewer color tools than Photoshop and some other programs.

After you create a layer, you can change its name. To change a layer’s name, hold the Alt/Option key on the keyboard, right-click on the layer, and select Rename Layer from the popup menu.

Adobe Photoshop Elements allows you to add effects to your pictures by clicking on Layer > New > Layer Settings and choosing from a list of pre-designed effects. These effects will appear next to the layer title when you add the layer. You can also add effects by combining layer styles and blending options. For example, you can apply a layer style to a layer, apply a blending option, and then add an additional layer style.

Introduction

Learning Photoshop as a beginner, we have to remember that it’s not a program that is considered easy to learn. Then how do we learn Photoshop without getting frustrated?

In the online world, there are several different ways to learn Photoshop; tutorials, videos, and books are all very popular.

Before learning Photoshop, you should know how to work with pixels (size) and an electronic pencil.

Using a mouse

It’s important to get used to using the mouse as if you were playing a video game. You should use the mouse to drag your image, or start a selection by selecting a part of an image.

The mouse can be used to move an image around the canvas, resize it, paint, and do other common tasks. If you’re just starting to use Photoshop, think of the mouse like a joystick.

Using your keyboard

While the mouse is used to drag, cut, and paste text, many Photoshop features use the keyboard. You can cut with Ctrl/Command + X or Ctrl/Command + I.

You can paste by pressing Ctrl/Command + V or Ctrl/Command + A.

You can also perform other actions with the keyboard such as panning.

There are several different ways to access the keyboard in Photoshop:

First, you can use the keyboard icon at the bottom right of your screen.

Second, you can press the keyboard function keys. The following keys work for most Photoshop applications:

CTRL/Command + I for image editing
