the best part of imperialism ii is the fact that it looks almost just like the original. the maps and graphics are almost identical. with this being said, there is a little trouble with this game. for instance, the game has a glaring flaw in its time-line. there are no dates on the map. the game starts at 1500, but there is no mention of the black death, the thirty years war, the french revolution, or the napoleonic wars. also, you will be able to play this game with computers that are much older than the time period that it claims to be set in.
so what makes imperialism ii more than a good game? it has a better ai and a slightly better interface, but these are really not enough to make it a good game. the ai is so good, you never feel like you are being conned into playing a game that is easier than it really is. i would recommend this game to anyone who enjoys a good strategy game. the ai is very good and will test your mettle, but the game isn’t difficult for the beginners either.
a brief history of the title: imperialism ii was first released in 1996 as a major expansion pack for the game imperialism. it consisted of 5 campaign missions. it was re-released as a stand-alone game in 1996. the expansion pack imperialism 2 was released in 2003 for windows and mac os x. a imperialism 2 demo was available for free download from 2001 to 2003.
after signing in, you will be taken to the new world, where you will be greeted by the new world’s king: cortez. cortez invites you to explore the new world and fight against pirates. you will be given the option to choose your nation. there are seven different game modes: search & rescue (which is similar to imperialism’s single player mode), balance of power (which is similar to imperialism’s campaign mode), conquest (which is similar to imperialism’s multiplayer mode), campaign (which is similar to imperialism’s campaign mode, but includes new territories), exploration (which is similar to imperialism’s exploration mode), exploration + balance of power (which includes all of the features of the previous three modes).
the game is a bit limited in terms of the number of resources it has. there are only 23 pre-defined resources. for example, you can only mine iron, gold, silver and diamonds. there are nine different minerals, but only 3 of them can be mined.
the ai is significantly smarter than in the predecessor. it has a higher level of strategy, and is more capable of exploiting your mistakes. and because of the game design, it is much harder to find yourself in a tactical situation where you have to fight an ai that is better than you.
