Founded in 1786, the order received its present statutes in 1838. It has a school in Mullingar, County Westmeath, Ireland, and has 15 prioresses and 21 postulants as of the 2004 census. The Church of Ireland archbishop of Armagh, Plunkett was canonised in 1987. Therefore, the order is affiliated with the Church of Ireland through Plunkett’s canonisation. Today, the Gillians are a community of about fifty sisters, teachers and lay helpers. The co-founders, the mother superior and four prioresses died between 1967 and 1982, and were canonised as Saints Oliver, Bridgit, Mina and Seanchan. The Gillian community is similar in form to a religious order of secular Carmelites, with a double-cell system of governance, the most important representative of the community being the mother superior, who is assisted by a board of directors called the Acolytic Council. The Gillians are affiliated with the Salesian Order and the Third Order of St. Francis. The primary purpose of the Gillians, as stated in their statutes, is the care of the sick and of the poor of the parish. There are about twenty-five elderly women who live in community in the order’s boarding house in Mullingar, while the rest of the sisters live in the double-cell system.
