A very small game engine and silly premise makes Retrocycles a rather unique game.
Choose from various different vehicles and suffer the consequences of your actions. Start the game with a basic car or try to take the streets with a top sports car. To escape the hordes of death on the bike, you can ride as fast as you like to your grave, guaranteed that it will be occupied eventually. The game is singleplayer only, it is pure survival and you will die fast.
The main feature of Retrocycles is that it only uses a single frame on the screen at any given time. Each vehicle has a single sprite representing it on the screen. Retrocycles was programmed by the duo Nemeric and is originally a DOS game. Other reviews will tell you, that it is a bit like Street Fighter.
The tutorial explains the basics of the control scheme quite well and there are no hard edges to catch unwary newcomers.
In Retrocycles you ride a bizarre vehicle that can never stop and leaves a deadly trail behind. In the most basic game mode, you can only make sudden right angle turns and are trapped with others in an inescapable arena. The last survivor wins.
Focus is firmly on online play. Pick a server that sounds fun from the server browser, hop in, stay and play there for as long as you like with the same people. Online, you will find many variations of the core gameplay principle. There are other objectives than mere survival. In Fortress Mode, two teams face each other. Each team owns a Fortress Zone and needs to defend it while trying to conquer the enemy team’s Fortress. In Sumo Mode, everyone needs to stay inside a shrinking circle to stay alive.
The game supports custom maps (sadly without an editor) and just about every gameplay variable can be tweaked to your, or more likely, the server owner’s heart’s content. Speed, map size, trail length and timeouts are just the start. Even the rigid right angle turn rule can be bent!
Retroycles is the Steam version of the open source game Armagetron Advanced, the almost only game of its kind to stay a bit relevant for twenty years.

Linda McMahon, a strong Senate ally of John McCain, has given her first interview since being accused by former Trump adviser Roger Stone of lying on a Senate committee investigating Russian involvement in the 2016 election.
Ms McMahon is worried about a call she received in September, days after the election, from a man with a German or Austrian accent and male voice, she told the Daily Beast, a US weekly.
A large cut was made into the conversation, she said, and she got the impression it might be a call to take some type of action against her.
When the caller asked why she had voted for Donald Trump, Ms McMahon replied, “I didn’t vote for either of them”.
Asked if she was implying that a staged protest might follow, the Republican senator for New Hampshire replied, “Yes, that’s what it would be”.
According to the Daily Beast report, from which it quoted extensively, the woman said the caller told her Mr Stone had spoken out on the issue of her, which concerned Mr Trump, and she needed to “clear it up”.
She added that some agents had been sent to follow her, but they had not arrived, and she was nervous about that.
Ms McMahon was a member of the Senate Commerce Committee’s subcommittee on communications, technology, innovation and the internet, and chairman Mr McCain was taking a very keen interest in what was going on with her. She was there when a bomb threat had been phoned in to the office of California Republican Mr Sen. Ted Cruz in September.
When he was ejected from the restaurant, along with Mr Cruz and his wife, they were separated for about half an hour and he had to take a separate exit.
The bomb threat was conclusively linked to a conspiracy theory about Mr Cruz’s father and the murder of President Kennedy. That is not the case with the Senate investigation.
