AutoCAD is a registered trademark of Autodesk, Inc. It was initially developed by Adrian L. Smith as a computer-aided design (CAD) application for the PDP-8 minicomputer. The first AutoCAD versions were written in assembly language. The first release was not officially named Autocad, but was simply called Program Product. The first “Autocad” version of the application came out in December 1982. For most of the 1980s and 1990s, Autocad was the main competitor to another high-profile developer of computer-aided design software, Dassault Systemes of France.
Mead and Trifon
The original design and development team was Adrian L. Smith and Daniel Trifon of Mead Design. Adrian Smith and Daniel Trifon left Autodesk in 1987 and continued to work on Autocad as a separate company, Trifon’s Design, Inc. The name Autodesk was adopted for Autocad around 1987. Daniel Trifon and Adrian Smith co-founded Autodesk with David M. Mead in 1988. Mead designed the first round of Autocad user interface concepts.
Initial versions of Autocad
AutoCAD 1.0 came out in December 1982 as a desktop application for the internal graphics controllers of the “luggable” PDP-8 minicomputers that were widely used for mainframe computer systems. Autocad 1.0 was available as a diskette for the PDP-8, for a variety of other microcomputers, as well as for the Apple II and Macintosh computer systems. A version for Apple’s Lisa was introduced in 1986, followed by a port for the IBM PC platform in 1987.
Most of the early releases of AutoCAD were written in assembly language. The first version that was originally based on the M6516 microprocessor was released in August 1983. The first version for the PDP-8 was written in assembly language.
The original designers of Autocad, Adrian L. Smith and Daniel Trifon, left Autodesk in 1987, after the release of the second version of Autocad. Trifon’s Design, Inc. was founded in 1987. Adrian Smith went on to design the user interface for AutoCAD. At the time of the founding of Autodesk, Adrian Smith and David M. Mead were the design engineers of Autodesk.
