The first time I played Elden Ring was as an amateur player back in the day, many years ago. I was so awestruck by its beauty that I could barely take my eyes off the screen. Now I’m returning to it as the Elder Scrolls developers. It was beautiful, it was intuitive, it was fun. I’m so excited to see how it’s improved on all those levels since then.
What was the reaction after the announcement?
Everyone was talking about how cool and how interesting the plot was. Elden Ring has the most dynamic story of the group so far. I think that only Elden Ring and Wurm Online are up to the same level of content.
What made you want to make Elden Ring?
It all started back in the PS2 era when I was more interested in RPGs. Although most MMOs back then were pretty much a steamroller of repetition, the RPGs that were on the PC were really incredible. RPGs like Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy were awesome, and it was no wonder that a lot of people were converting to the PC. When they launched the PlayStation 2, it was PS2’s turn to rule the world. The RPG market became oversaturated, but I was more interested in FPSs and RTSs than in RPGs.
When I started at ZeniMax Online Studios in 2006 as a general production staffer, an Eastern colleague started talking to me about his work on Black Lion Online, which was the successor to Black Lion (which had just been released on the PS2). It was a World War II MMORPG, and at that time I was working on PS3 RPGs in the MMO department, so I was very interested. The idea of combining the two genres intrigued me.
What were your priorities in creating the game?
We started planning the production schedule around the development of the PS3 version of MMOs. Therefore, we were aiming for the timeline for the launch of the PS3.
The design and development of the PS3 version is based on the PS2 version. We were developing three MMOs on PS2, which allowed us to easily transfer the key systems, but we were all thinking that there’s so much room to work on the PS3, and we began gradually thinking about the possibilities.
