another in a long line of phenomenal kids-sucking-on-stupid-fear-fueled monsters is the goonies. its a pretty unique movie in that its not about children, its about teenagers. the most important takeaway from this film is that three of the four members of the goonies are never together at the same time.
perhaps the one who came closest to harnessing the power of kaiju cinema was the great king kong director, akira ifans sons of godzilla. thats not to say the film is in any way derivative of the original. its a sharp-as-a-dagger satire of the cynical, evil corporation genre that both subverts and adapts aspects of the modern blockbuster. but its clear in many ways that ifans is a direct descendent of ishiro honda, making sons of godzilla one of the most successful kaiju movies of all time. while ifans is a chameleon of a filmmaker, his ability to change with the times makes him a perfectly suitable heir to the throne of the original japanese kaiju. jim vorel

godzilla may have ruled the kaiju film universe since 1954, but godzilla vs. mothra was the first time in 50 years that one of the series most iconic monsters got a solo movie. and it wasnt just a nice side piece to the godzilla story. mothra had a fully developed, involving, and surprisingly emotional back story, which both made sense and was somehow perfectly in keeping with what was expected from the kaiju films of the 1960s. and with mothra, honda finally managed to find the perfect balance between the kaiju film and its modern counterpart, blending the timeless feel of his earlier films with the fun, bombastic tone of the godzilla films. jim vorel
while romero is obviously known for his horror movies, the crazies was his answer to john carpenter. with a story that, once again, is based on a story from stephen king, but here involves a small town of people with a huge chip on their collective shoulders. theyre sick of being outsiders, so they begin pushing the townspeople around in the hopes of getting rid of the newcomers. the ensuing conflict (which involves the unwitting consumption of a local radio signal which turns the infected into crazed, aggressive zombies) culminates with a long chase scene in a shopping mall, where the humans finally confront their enemy. the crazies is an excellent, fun, all-too-brief exercise in pure, no-holds-barred, big-screen action, and features a terrific performance by john goodman. jim vorel lets begin with the obvious. its a movie about giant monsters. and for the most part, thats about the extent of the plot, at least in the first half, when its the titular monsters who are the main focus. the usual beats are all there, including an aging man doomed to be destroyed in a way that really, really sucks, some girl in peril (whose problems become even more perilous as the film progresses), a hot girl who should probably be on an island somewhere with a little bit of trouble (liam neesons character), a hella mean boss, some grumpy men who turn out to be half-frozen and a few other boring people. there are also some decent special effects (all of which were done by gareth edwards, of all people) and a gorgeous, shadowy looking creature that holds the promise of more weirdness to come. its no great shakes, but its a perfectly serviceable piece of escapism. michael burgin 5ec8ef588b
