The Detroit Free Press reported Wednesday the district earned a “C” in its first annual school accountability report card.
That grade prompted some Detroit students and their parents to take to social media and cry foul.
“Unfortunately this is not the first report card that has showed children underachieving as a whole. This has been happening over and over to no end,” Ja’Shion Young, an eighth-grader at Michigan City Academy for the Arts, said.
“As a whole, D-F-S never had a business plan for DPS. They’ve never been able to define their strategy or their goals. Then they go out and implement curricula that are not aligned with the district’s goals. The whole thing is a failure,” Young said.
Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan said the negative grade isn’t an indication that there are challenges facing D-F-S, but rather that the district is under review to ensure students are getting the help they need.
“I don’t take the grade personally,” Mayor Duggan said in a statement. “It’s our job to hold the city’s educational system accountable. All of us are working for Detroit Public Schools.”
About a dozen parents filed an emergency petition with the Michigan Court of Appeals on Tuesday asking the state to intervene and abolish the Detroit Public Schools Community District.
The Detroit Public School district was formed in December 1998 when the Board of Education and the City of Detroit merged. Superintendent Nikolai Vitti succeeded Roy Reneau in January 2015.
The Detroit Public School Board is scheduled to vote Thursday on the emergency petition.
