Tutorial: Creating a Basic Photo Manipulation
Photoshop provides a built-in template for creating image manipulations that you can use when you open Photoshop. If you open the template you can use one of several modes to start creating an image manipulation. Here’s a look at the initial screen.
To access the built-in templates, choose Image⇒Template⇒Photoshop.
1. Open a picture that you have just taken.
2. Click and drag the file from your hard drive to the new blank canvas area.
3. Enter a name for the image in the Name box.
4. Make sure that the Type radio button is selected next to the Type of Graphics drop-down arrow.
5. Click the Color and Adjustments buttons at the top of the window.
This section of the window is labeled Adjustments.
6. Click the Picture Effects radio button and choose a style to apply to the photo.
For a list of the available styles, see the next section.
7. Continue to add filters to the picture, including a style, tone, and color filter and a lens distortion filter.
8. Click the Adjustments button.

9. Click the Curves button and adjust the curves if you want to desaturate or lighten or darken or lower the shadows or levels.
10. Click the Hue/Saturation button and adjust the color of the photo.
You can desaturate (desaturate) colors, remove or add color, lighten or darken colors, or lower or raise the luminance in the image.
11. Choose the Unsharp Mask tool from the Edit drop-down menu and adjust the Radius setting and Depth setting.
The Radius setting determines how much the pixels are sharpened by the Unsharp Mask filter. The Depth setting determines the amount of adjustment to be made after the filter is applied.
12. Continue applying filters to the photo.
If you are familiar with Adobe’s Lightroom software (see Chapter 17 for information about Lightroom), you can find a Photoshop Lightroom exporter that allows you to import an image that has been created in Lightroom (see the third photo in this exercise for an example of an export from Lightroom).
