when the player picks up the scar, scar asks what he was doing in the zone. scar was not quite sure, but he received some sort of warning. he thought it might be dangerous, but it did not feel like the zone as he is used to. scar only does not understand why he was sent here, though. scar points out that he was also touched by the power of the zone. when he first arrived, he wanted to fight the bandits, but they just tricked him. when he asked why they did that, the answer was just as perplexing as why he was sent here in the first place. scar decides to leave the zone with leshiy in a helicopter. it is then that leshiy reveals to scar that he has a different plan: he wants to use scar to help with his own plan. forester is the one that has been stuck in the spacial anomaly for the past several years. he wants a way out, because he lost his wife. she was one of the mercenaries who were killed by the bandits in the zone, and he wanted revenge on them. and he has the knowledge and the equipment to help free scar, however scar is still suspicious, and thinks that it has something to do with leshiy.

when the player enters the zone, he will notice a radioactive fog covering the area, after which he is asked to identify the zone. although he is not prepared, when he obtains access to the outside world, he is quickly immersed in intense fighting. unfortunately, the player is not given any weapons or equipment. he is also given no explanation as to the reason he was sent here. the struggle begins with a zvezda (russian for’star’) level, and the player must complete this level before he can move on to the next level. however, the player must overcome many obstacles and dangerous hazards as he moves through the higher levels, including numerous enemies, unfair bosses, and dangerous traps. these typically range from a tricky scenario to prevent the player from dying, to a tnt trap that may destroy the player’s life bar at any second. in order to continue, the player must jump on and cling to moving platforms. the difficulty will rise as the player moves up in levels. when the player beats a level, he will face a new one, and he will be able to jump on a helicopter to travel through the zone to the next area, which is called the white forest. eventually, scar finds the transmitter he was looking for, only to find that forester had lied to him, and the generator inside the transmitter was simply a trap to lure him into a place where he is captured by the bandits, who are part of a rival corporation also interested in the area.
