i have a csr 1000 v. i have tried loading the 2 week trial, however the vmx debugs keeps saying “starting floating ippool”. i am new to csr 1000 v. i have tried looking for help at cisco’s website and most places online, however i cannot figure out the problem.
all of our troubleshooting was on borrowed time because according to cisco smart licensing , this latest smart license feature is only enabled on the “f” and “v” feature sets. obviously the server has the f feature set, but the client (a physical cisco crs 1000v) has the v feature set.
let’s take a moment to appreciate the confidence cisco has with its “smart” license, either intentional or simply incompetence. cisco recommends a licensing method called fine grained throttling (ftt), as opposed to the traditional throttling method where you limit the throughput, based on license availability, to a particular feature set level (here we are working with the v feature set but the f feature set would provide similar insights). ftt allows you to specify the number of concurrent calls per license, rather than the number of concurrent licenses. you specify the ftt value in the form of a number, where higher is better, with the lowest limit of one call.
cisco’s idea of “fine-grained throttling” is to allow the firewall to limit the throughput based on how many calls it is performing, or how active the firewall’s features are. the cisco crs 1000v has an internal load-balanced system, so the firewall is always keeping track of how many calls are active. it’s not (obviously) running ftt on any of the conversations since we are not a real telecommunications company, but it is keeping track of how many calls are active and limiting the throughput based on these values.
But the important part of this whole debacle was that we didn’t realize the Cisco CSR 1000v did not stop the voice flow. If the “this subscription is now on a Smart License” message did pop up, the experience would have been even worse because the software is not functioning properly in this instance and no console operations would have been enabled. The software is extremely basic and poorly documented. To even write this note, we finally worked out the configuration of the license throughput level in the old traditional licensing model. As long as we had the right radio supported, the CSR 1000v was working fine.
Smart Licensing is completely new to most people, so the idea of licensing that is “Internet-wide” and only supported on the devices that are deployed in a public cloud is a scary concept to most IT professionals. But we had to embrace it quickly because we needed a consistent VoIP routing solution for all tenants, not just Cisco’s Private Cloud. Once we threw away the traditional model, we had to deal with different versions of the router, keeping in mind that the CSR 1000v comes in two flavors: one with Cisco Smart Software and the other with traditional licenses.
The reason for using two different flavors is because the Cisco Smart Software can only be used in a Public cloud environment, whereas the traditional licenses can be used in private clouds, and a number of services are only available in public clouds. But the cost is the same for a public cloud deployment, so we went with the traditional licenses on the CSR 1000v.
I’d think in the future, with IOS XE 3.x, you can take advantage of Cisco CA-450v adapters running vRouter (vanilla mode) and based on the device driver model in IOS XE 16.12 and above, that will enable VIRT mode (as you’ve shown). This would put device drivers in a very stable environment with IOS XE 3.0 or higher, however, that doesn’t appear to be a supported configuration yet.
